Thanks to globalization and so many people with diverse skill sets, we’re finding ourselves trying to simplify things for people in other professions. The problem with this is that we end up with concepts either not being fully understood or worse, over complicated.

Buzzword Glossary

Here is my buzzword glossary to simplify and maybe even abolish some nasty buzzwords:

1. Cloud: Server – Yip, that’s pretty much it. Whether it’s one computer or many, the cloud is just a server.
2. Big Data: Database – You can run queries to find patterns, trends and more. It has been happening since the dawn of the internet.
3. Internet of Things: Internet – If it’s connected to the internet, it’s part of the internet of things. Thus, the internet is the internet of things.
4. Bleeding Edge: Beta tester – Or just someone who does it first, whatever it may be…
5. On the Edge: Device – Phone, tablet, computer, it’s all the edge.
6. Blockchain: Excessive storage – Also referred to as a distributed database. We’ve also been doing this for years but this way is just more secure and more work.
7. Client-centric: Built for the customer – Like a products that are created, they’re created for a customer. Client-centric products just claim to be, somehow, more for the customer.
8. Millenial: A person – Usually young.
9. Holistic Approach: Take everything into account
10. Rich User Experience: Ease of use – Find a way to make a customer feel warm and fuzzy while using your product.
11. Disrupt: Do the things no one else is doing

Of course this list is a little satirical but it’s not too far from the truth. Beware of buzzwords and new trends in technology. It’s not to say that these trends aren’t valuable but be sure to use them where you need them and throw the wordy jargon away.
